I have no need of an iPad either, and was surprised at its sudden popularity, especially following a decade of failed Windows tablets.
But obviously plenty of people do find them fun and useful. Key factors in its success seem to be a responsive touch interface, long battery life, a no-contract 3G option, and integrated app store.
Now there will be a rash of copycat devices. All the competition should lead to tablet that even I might not be able to resist in a few years.
